Treatments performed for research study and exhibition in Shoes: Anatomy, Identity, Magic
The tips of high heels (top pieces) have been made since the mid-to-late 20th century with thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), a high performance but quickly degrading material not meant to last the lifetime of the heel. To preserve the original top pieces on these shoes in the museum's collection, I conducted research on the material and several possibly suitable treatments. This research helped me design a consolidation wrap of painted Japanese paper adhered around the pieces with Lascaux Acrylic Adhesive.
